Acceso para Diálisis

A tunneled dialysis catheter is a soft, flexible tube placed into a large vein to provide reliable access for hemodialysis. Because the catheter is placed under the skin and tunneled into position, it’s designed for longer-term use with a lower infection risk than temporary catheters.

Preparation: Dialysis catheter placement is commonly performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Using ultrasound guidance, a large central vein is accessed to ensure a safe and precise entry point.

Placement: Once the vein is accessed with a needle, a guidewire is gently advanced into the vein and its position is confirmed with X-ray (fluoroscopy). A small incision is made in the upper chest, and a tunnel is created under the skin where the catheter will pass. The catheter is advanced through this tunnel and into the vein, with the tip positioned near the heart to allow high-flow dialysis. The external portion of the catheter remains outside the skin and is secured with a dressing. The internal portion stays in place for as long as dialysis is needed.

Completion: Once positioned, the catheter is flushed to confirm proper flow and secured in place. The incision is closed with a small stitch or adhesive, and a sterile dressing is applied. The catheter is usually ready to use right away for dialysis treatment.

Recovery: This is a minimally invasive procedure, and most patients can go home shortly afterward. Mild tenderness at the insertion site is common for a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Detailed catheter care instructions will be provided to help keep the site clean and reduce infection risk.
