Enlarged Prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia BPH)
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate, is a non-cancerous condition that occurs when the prostate gland grows larger than normal as men age. The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland located below the bladder and surrounding the urethra. As it enlarges, the gland can press against the urethra and bladder, disrupting normal urine flow and causing a range of urinary symptoms that can significantly affect quality of life. Conservative treatments may include:
Lifestyle changes (fluid control, limiting caffeine/alcohol)
Medications (alpha-blockers or 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors)
Symptoms
Frequent or urgent need to urinate, especially at night
Weak or interrupted urine stream
Incomplete bladder emptying
Urinary incontinence in advanced cases
Risk Factors
Age over 50
Family history of prostate issues
Obesity
Sedentary lifestyle
Coexisting conditions like heart disease or diabetes
