Other Conditions

Enlarged Prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia BPH)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate, is a non-cancerous condition that occurs when the prostate gland grows larger than normal as men age. The prostate is a small, walnut-shaped gland located below the bladder and surrounding the urethra. As it enlarges, the gland can press against the urethra and bladder, disrupting normal urine flow and causing a range of urinary symptoms that can significantly affect quality of life. Conservative treatments may include:

  • Lifestyle changes (fluid control, limiting caffeine/alcohol)

  • Medications (alpha-blockers or 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors)

Symptoms

  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate, especially at night

  • Weak or interrupted urine stream

  • Incomplete bladder emptying

  • Urinary incontinence in advanced cases

Risk Factors

  • Age over 50

  • Family history of prostate issues

  • Obesity

  • Sedentary lifestyle

  • Coexisting conditions like heart disease or diabetes
