Fallopian Tube Recanalization

Fallopian tube recanalization is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat blocked fallopian tubes, a common cause of female infertility.

Preparation: Fallopian tube recanalization is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. No incisions are made, and recovery is much faster than with traditional surgery.

Catheter Access: Using real-time X-ray imaging (fluoroscopy) for precision, a thin, flexible catheter is gently guided into the cervix, similar to the placement of an intrauterine device (IUD).

Fallopian Tube Cannulation: A smaller, flexible microcatheter is then carefully threaded into the opening of the fallopian tube. If a blockage is present, gentle fluid pressure or a thin guidewire is used to dislodge and clear the obstruction without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Contrast Dye Injection: A small amount of contrast dye is injected to confirm that the tube is now open and allowing free passage from the uterus to the ovary.

Completion and Monitoring: Once patency is confirmed, the catheter is removed, and the procedure is complete. No stitches are needed, and most patients go home within a few hours.

Recovery and Results: Recovery after fallopian tube recanalization is typically quick and comfortable. Most women return to normal activities within 24 hours, and menstrual cycles remain unchanged. Because the procedure directly restores the natural reproductive pathway, many patients can attempt conception immediately after treatment. Success rates vary depending on individual factors, but many women conceive naturally within a few months following the procedure.
