Endovenous Ablation

Endovenous ablation is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive procedure used to treat varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. It works by delivering targeted energy inside the diseased vein, causing it to seal closed. Once the vein is closed, blood is naturally rerouted into healthy nearby veins, restoring proper circulation and reducing pressure within the legs. This improved blood flow also helps support the function of deeper veins.

The procedure is performed in our outpatient office and typically takes less than an hour. Recovery is quick — most patients are able to walk immediately afterward. We usually recommend wearing compression stockings for a short time following treatment to support healing and enhance results. As circulation improves, patients experience relief from uncomfortable symptoms such as swelling, leg heaviness, fatigue, aching, and visible varicose veins.

At Vascular & Interventional Specialists, we use two highly effective forms of vein ablation:

  • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): Uses gentle, controlled heat to seal the vein.

  • Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA): Uses focused laser energy to achieve the same result.

Both techniques offer excellent outcomes with minimal discomfort, no downtime, and lasting symptom relief.

Preparation: Vein ablation is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. You’ll remain awake and comfortable while the leg is cleaned, numbed, and prepared for treatment.

Ultrasound Mapping and Access: Using ultrasound guidance, the diseased vein is identified and a tiny puncture in the skin is created. A thin, flexible catheter or laser fiber is then inserted directly into the vein.

Delivery of Thermal Energy: Once the catheter is in position, a radiofrequency (RF) or laser energy source is activated. This heat gently and precisely seals the vein wall from the inside, causing it to collapse and eventually be reabsorbed by the body over time.

Blood Flow Rerouting: After the vein is sealed, blood is naturally rerouted through nearby healthy veins, improving circulation and reducing symptoms.

Completion and Dressing: The catheter is removed, and a small bandage is applied — no stitches are needed. Most patients are able to walk immediately after the procedure.

Recovery and Results: Recovery from vein ablation is typically fast and easy. Most patients return to work and normal activities within 24 hours, with minimal discomfort. Compression stockings are often recommended for a short period after the procedure to aid healing and optimize circulation.

Results are usually noticeable within days to weeks, with continued improvement in leg appearance and a significant reduction in pain, swelling, and heaviness. Because the underlying problem is corrected, long-term outcomes are excellent, and recurrence rates are low.
