Other Conditions

Varicose Veins

Vein disorders such as varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occur when leg veins can’t efficiently return blood to the heart, often due to weakened or damaged valves. This leads to blood pooling, causing enlarged veins, swelling, discomfort, and sometimes skin changes or ulcers. Though often seen as cosmetic, untreated venous disease can worsen and affect your quality of life.

Symptoms

Symptoms may vary in severity and include:
  • Visible varicose or spider veins

  • Leg heaviness, aching, or fatigue, especially after prolonged standing

  • Swelling in the lower legs or ankles

  • Itching or burning sensations along the vein

  • Skin discoloration or thickening around the ankles

  • Open sores or leg ulcers that are slow to heal

Risk Factors

Factors that may increase your risk of vein disease include:
  • Family history of varicose veins or venous insufficiency

  • Age over 50

  • Female gender (due to hormonal influences and pregnancies)

  • Obesity

  • Jobs requiring long periods of standing or sitting

  • History of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

  • Sedentary lifestyle or lack of exercise
