Foam Sclerotherapy
Foam sclerotherapy is a safe, minimally invasive treatment for venous insufficiency. It’s often performed after vein ablation and is highly effective in treating, branching, tortuous or smaller side veins that are harder to access or treat effectively with a laser or RF. Treatment is quick and performed in-office. Recovery is simple, with most patients wearing compression stockings afterward to support healing and improve results.
Preparation: Foam sclerotherapy is performed in an outpatient setting and usually takes 15–45 minutes, depending on the number of veins being treated. Local anesthesia is applied and the treatment area is cleaned and prepared.
Injection of the Sclerosant: Under real-time ultrasound guidance, a very fine needle is gently placed into the problem vein, where a sclerosant solution is injected. This causes the vein walls to collapse, stopping the blood flow.
Redirection of Blood Flow: Once the vein is sealed, blood naturally reroutes to nearby healthy veins, improving circulation in the treated area. Over time, the treated vein is reabsorbed by the body and gradually fades from view.
Multiple Injections (if Needed): Several veins can be treated in a single session, and multiple sessions may be recommended for optimal results, especially for larger or more extensive vein networks.
Completion and Compression: After treatment, compression stockings or bandages are often applied to support healing and enhance results. You can walk immediately after the procedure and resume normal daily activities.
Recovery and Results: Recovery from foam sclerotherapy is typically quick and straightforward. Most patients return to regular activities right away, although strenuous exercise and direct sun exposure should be avoided for a few days. Minor side effects — such as mild swelling, redness, or bruising — usually resolve within days.
Visible improvement often begins within 2–4 weeks, with continued fading over several months as the treated veins are fully absorbed. Many patients experience not only cosmetic improvement but also relief from uncomfortable symptoms like burning, itching, or heaviness in the legs.
